Interior of Custom Outdoor Sauna with wood burning stove

Ten Tips for sauna use From No Boundaries Saunas

No Boundaries Saunas wants to ensure your outdoor sauna experience is as healthy, relaxing and fulfilling as possible.  Be sure to practice these ten tips for sauna use at your next outdoor sauna session.

  1. Hydrate Before and After: Drink plenty of water before entering the sauna and after your session. Saunas can cause significant sweating, and staying hydrated is essential for a comfortable and safe experience.
  2. Start with a Shower: Take a quick shower before entering the sauna to cleanse your skin and remove any lotions or oils that can interfere with the detoxifying process.
  3. Dress Light: Wear as little clothing as you feel comfortable with, such as a swimsuit or a towel. The goal is to allow your body to sweat and release toxins.
  4. Time it Right: Sauna sessions typically last between 15-20 minutes. Avoid staying too long to prevent overheating or dehydration. If you're new to saunas, start with shorter sessions and gradually increase the time.
  5. Use a Towel or Mat: Sit on a towel or a sauna mat to absorb sweat and prevent your skin from sticking to the sauna bench.
  6. Relax and Breathe: Saunas are for relaxation. Focus on your breathing, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Slow, deep breaths enhance the calming effect of the sauna.
  7. Sauna Etiquette: Respect other sauna users by keeping conversations hushed and maintaining a relaxed atmosphere. Most saunas are considered quiet zones for contemplation and relaxation.
  8. Cool Down Safely: After your sauna session, cool down gradually. Step outside or into a cooler room and allow your body temperature to return to normal before re-entering the sauna or taking a cold shower.
  9. Cold Showers or Plunges: Some saunas offer cold showers or plunge pools for a refreshing contrast. Alternating between hot and cold can invigorate your body and improve circulation.
  10. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how you feel. If you start to feel lightheaded, dizzy, or uncomfortable, leave the sauna immediately. Your safety and well-being should always come first.

Remember that everyone's tolerance for heat varies, so it's essential to adjust the sauna experience to your comfort level. Saunas can have numerous health benefits, but they should always be enjoyed in moderation and with mindfulness. If you have any medical conditions or concerns, consult with a healthcare professional before using a sauna.
